Winston Churchill, a huge admirer of Turing, credited him with making the single biggest contribution to Allied victory in the war against Nazi Germany. This alone makes Turing a heroic figure, but it is what happened later that makes him equally a tragic one. As an alternative to prison, he was ordered to receive treatment with oestrogen injections — chemical castration. In , 16 days before his 42nd birthday, Turing died from cyanide poisoning. An inquest ruled that his death was suicide. And in he was granted a posthumous pardon by the Queen. It is the sort of film the British film industry does so well. Descriptions are given of the salient differences among varieties that are otherwise difficult for Western collectors to distinguish; a special finding guide for the maddeningly detailed Kanei Tsuho is alone worth the price of the book. Unfortunately only a small percentage of even the common Kanei varieties are listed here, and the more comprehensive Japanese works covering them are difficult to obtain.

In addition to enhancing the appearance of banknotes, the complexity of the new designs was intended to make counterfeiting harder. The task of designing the new Series D notes was given to the Bank’s new in-house designer, Harry Eccleston , who not only designed the notes themselves, but also created three individual portraits of the Queen. To that end, a Series D 10 shilling note was designed, featuring Sir Walter Raleigh , which would become the 50 pence note upon decimalisation, and intended to be the first of the new series to be issued.
However, inflation meant that the lifespan of such a note would be too short—estimates by the Decimal Currency Board suggested that a 10 shilling note would last approximately five months —and it was more economical to have a coin instead: Nonetheless, all banknotes, regardless of when they were withdrawn from circulation, may be presented at the Bank of England where they will be exchanged for current banknotes.

Private Singaporean banks can thus safely accept Brunei dollar notes for deposit, knowing that the MAS will not only buy these foreign notes at a one-to-one rate with Singapore dollars but will do so without charging a fee. Vice versa with Bruneian banks. This is actually quite a lot of cash. There is no indication what caused this pattern. This means that any debt or transaction can be settled using MAS-issued banknotes, although if a payee the person taking a payment notifies a payer ahead of time, they can choose to avoid using legal tender and settle on an alternative means for transacting, say gold or euros.
Since Brunei dollars are only customary tender, there is no default legal obligation on the part of retailers to accept them.

The Early History of Heraldry. Many heralds were originally minstrels who after tournaments or battles extolled the deeds of the victors. The regulation of distinguishing the various coats of arms evolved according to a hereditary system, which also required the Heralds especially of the English royal household to keep records both of arms and family descents.

This event was known as “the fall of the rupee. The silver rupee continued as the currency of India through the British Raj and beyond.

Many slang expressions for old English money and modern British money technically now called Pounds Sterling originated in London, being such a vast and diverse centre of commerce and population. While sources of British money slang vary widely, London cockney rhyming slang features particularly strongly in money slang words and their origins. The history of money and its terminology, formal and slang, is fascinating – the language was and remains full of character, and although much has been lost, much still survives in the money slang words and expressions of today.
The origins of slang money expressions provide amusing and sometimes very significant examples of the way that language develops, and how it connects to changing society, demographics, political and economic systems, and culture. Money, and its amazing aspects of culture, design, society, history, language, finance, science, manufacture, technology, diversity, etc. The innovatively styled designs of the new British coins will provide plenty more opportunities to have fun with money, quite aside from earning it and spending it.
The designs make more sense, and the concept becomes more interesting, when you see the coins in ‘shield’ formation. They will keep pub drunks amused for hours..
